After my post about in-ear earbuds with mics, I thought I should counterbalance with a few words on what happens when I’ve got serious conversations to make.

Oregon went hands free this year. To celebrate, Plantronics sent me a Plantronics Discovery 975 Bluetooth Headset. I had been a Jawbone guy up until that point and I figured I’d let you know why.

Yes, it’s always great to get a new piece of gear but here are two things about the Plantronics Discovery 975 Bluetooth Headset that set it apart for me. One is painfully obvious (and I wonder why every bluetooth headset company isn’t doing this) and the other is an issue of design that just “works” for me.

The thing comes with a case that not only uses a standard miniusb chord, but also stores an additional battery inside. So, in short, then I put the thing in it’s case, it charges. So nice. Throw in a little standard chord action and I can quickly charge both battery and case on the same chord I charge my mifi or Kindle with.

As much as these things need to be about quality and battery life, they also need to be about convenience. This one excels at that. Game changer for me – and just pleasant to deal with.

The second issue is the design. If you click on this link, you’ll see that this is one of those bluetooth headsets that just connects into the inner ear. For me, it worked out of the box, but it came with a bunch of fitting pieces to (I assume) fit whatever kind of ear you might throw her way.

This is very subjective, but I like the feel of the thing. It’s so small (light) that it can stick right in the ear and not feel like it’s going to fall off. I’ve been surprised at how it stays in regardless of what I throw at it, and now feel completely comfortable with it. By not being some over the ear thing, I can pop it in and out quickly (I’m not the type who likes to show off how cool I am by wearing it everywhere).

Throw in the fact that I can put it in the super cool charging case and I simply can’t tell you how long the battery lasts, having never let it charge down. I did spend nearly three hours on a car trip to Seattle chatting on the thing so I know it is as least that good.

How good is the noise cancellation? I haven’t subjected it to a rock concert or anything else so dramatic, but I’ve used it in a loud car and during a conversation and had no problems at all.

It fits, it works, the battery pack makes a ton of sense and it’s easy to charge and use. Doesn’t get much better than that.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when they sent me a paid of iFrogz EarPollution Timbre with Mic earbuds. I was more than surprised, really like these things and need to tell you why.

These in-ear earbuds have 2 distinct qualities that I’ve never used before. The first is a wood chamber (for a special sound quality) and a microphone attached (for plugging into a phone).

I’m no audiophile by any sense of the imagination but when I compare these things to other earbuds I own (some costing more), there’s a “richness” to the sound that I don’t have on my other earbuds. It feels like I’m hearing more of the music and less of the audio – does that make sense? Don’t know if this is an iFrogz circuitry thing or the wood chamber (or both) but I like what I’m hearing. They’re well made too – I don’t fear their falling apart (or chord fraying) like I’ve had on previous earbuds.

The microphone is thing I really like – and what really excites me about the product. I’ve had this thing plugged into my iPhone more than my Bluetooth Headset lately and nobody has mentioned any difference in our conversations. I can now get great music and answer calls when needed – something I’ve never had before.

Obviously I wouldn’t recommend putting these in both ears while driving a car but they come in handy when at an event meeting, or even catching a quick snooze. This isn’t an microphone for an extended conversation with a lot of noise in the background (you’ll want something with noise cancellation for that), but it certainly does the job with considerably better sound (and class) than the cheap white things that came with the phone.

Yes, I’ve been using the on the exercise bike- but haven’t had the guts to take a call while doing so yet.

These are my earbuds of choice right now and allow me to take a call when needed. It doesn’t get much better than that.

If you’ve thought there isn’t much difference in the world of in-ear earbuds, you might want to give the iFrogz EarPollutions a try. If you have a phone that plays music, you can now have a mic when needed and get the most of your phone.

MediaServer is one of those iPhone apps that makes you realize how cool the whole iPhone (and one day soon, iPad) platform is.

The app lets you play media from your iPhone on your PS3, XBox 360, Boxee, etc. It does this through a little tech (that doesn’t get enough attention) called UPnP. It’s the same tech that lets you watch Hulu on the Xbox. Basically you launch the MediaServer app on the iPhone/iPod Touch and the content is then available on anything that supports the protocol. You just browse and play the files. No, I’m not making it sound too easy – this is just one of the programs and protocols that actually works as described.

Now, how do you get these files on your iPhone? Use any FTP client. It’s screaming fast too. You have to be on the same wifi network to make that happen – but it’s really easy.

What can you do with something like this? Lots! Here are a few usage recommendations:

Have a training video that deserves to be watched on the TV (YouTube Secret Weapon anyone?)? Quickly place it on the iPhone and watch it on the same xBox 360 you used to think was only good for blasting bad guys.

Forget sharing family movies (or, let’s admit it, some wacky viral video) on that tiny little iPhone screen. Keep a gig or two of great stuff available for whenever anyone is ready to watch and stream right to their PS3.

You get the idea. Heck, post a few more ideas below in the comments.

The guys from Particle-S have something very special here. If I can only say one thing – PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THE LOGICAL PROGRESSION OF WHERE THIS THING CAN GO. Imagine a Video Podcast client or some other content receipt mechanism tied into this thing …

Did I mention this thing is less than a Venti Coffee at Starbucks?

When Andy Jenkins told me about his Video Boss (click link to open up new window) program, I couldn’t be more thrilled. I’ve appreciated his business and SEO skills but, to be honest, what I wanted was his “mad” video skills to ad to my marketing cache. Internet Marketing is going video – regardless of what you think about the process – and the market now has a toolset and training program to learn how to do this.

Have you seen his work? You actually probably have and didn’t know it, but here’s a sample from YouTube (direct link here if you can’t see the embed below). It’s actually only a few minutes from the third part of his nearly TWO HOURS of freeline content you get at that link. He does, in fact, show you how he “did” this video – as well as give additional content that will blow your mind.

At the very least, opt-in to grab the free content, and take LOTS OF NOTES. Andy offers MP4 downloads of the content and I suggest that you take them.

When Andy asked if I’d throw some of the YouTube Secret Weapon content into the mix, I jumped at the chance to be part of this project. You can hear more about what I doing with it in Part 4 of the free content (told you there was a lot).

Video Boss will become, I am completely convinced, the defacto and default course in this space. Andy’s ability to mix marketing with the power offered by new media creation is something that has been completely lacking (because there was really only one who could pull it off).

It has arrived – and I recommend strongly that you pick up Video Boss.

And yes, he really was one of the producers of the Blair Witch Project.

I wasn’t quite sure what to think when iDox sent me one of their Traveler Series iPhone Cases for review. It seemed initially like a bit of a 1-trick wonder (it’s just a case/stand – no charging, power, etc.) but after a few days, … I “got it.”

This (jump over to the site for pictures) thing is hands down, the most solid case I’ve ever seen or used for the iPhone. It’s proudly designed and manufactured in the USA and it looks like it. It puts the phone in a very stable plastic grip that just “feels” right – not like someone was trying to cash in on some of the iPhone case money. I hope that makes sense.

But it’s not a case for putting in your pocket or attaching to your car – it’s a case for viewing video content. Right now I’m streaming the news to my iPhone as I type this and it all looks great.

Next week, I’m on 5 planes in less than 48 hours. I’ll be catching up on the latest video using my iPhone and my iDox. If you travel and want a SOLID case that flips open to both viewing stand and “clock holder” (again, check out the site), this is the product for you.

In April I’m taking a trip to China and taking some travel tech with me to see how it fares on a real trip. I’ll update this review when I get back.

When asked about my recommendations for a Webinar solution, I suggest you try GoToWebinar – the affordable, do-it-yourself Web event service that doesn’t require a consultant. Free Trial available.

GotoWebinar is my favorite because the quality and scalability is there – but it is at a price everyone can afford. They get my highest recommendation.

My next Webinar will use GotoWebinar. Will yours?

The best USB Microphone for your money right now is the AT2020USB. The company behind it, Audio Technica, has been making audio equipment for a long time and knows the game well. The link will take you to the product at the best price we’ve found it online.

In the grand scheme of things, the AT2020USB is a relatively new USB microphone. It’s the USB version of their very popular AT2020 condenser microphone – a standard for a many.

Using a USB microphone makes recording easy – as you can just plug the mic into your computer and record away. Be warned, however, that you can’t plug it directly into “traditional” audio equipment. But, since this isn’t what people looking for a USB microphone are generally looking for, we can recommend the AT2020USB accordingly.
